The most wonderful day of the year is here - it's Emmy nominations day!
Check out the list below of the major categories. Once again, The Affair was missed, but The People vs OJ Simpson got much deserved love. FINALLY The Americans are getting their time to shine, with acting and outstanding drama nominations. Canadian love to Tatiana Maslany, who is one of the most talented actresses on television right now and deserves this nomination so, SO much. Words can't express how disappointed I am that James Corden was nominated while Seth Meyers left out in the dust. Meyers' program is far superior to Corden, it just lacks singing celebrities. Although looking at that category apparently celebrities in cars is the one sure-fire way to get nominated. Otherwise, everything is as we would have guessed it. Thankfully no Big Bang Theory in there, and two Sarah Paulson nominations. All is (mostly) right in the world. Tonight’s Tony Awards opened with host James Corden giving a touching tribute to the victims of the Orlando shooting. From there the ‘Hamilton’ cast sang the opening number, introducing Corden the way they introduce Hamilton in the show. (It was perfect). After a quick monologue with some top notch (if a little tired) Tony jokes, Corden sang “That Could Be Me” about being a child watching the theatre and thinking he could be up on that stage. This included iterations of some of the most infamous Broadway tunes of all time. They also took this time to introduce all the acting nominees for the year, which was awesome to see. My main squeeze Jake Gyllenhaal presented the first award of the night, Featured Actress in a Play, which went to Jayne Houdyshell for ‘The Humans’. We got our taste of ‘School of Rock’, which, to be honest, is all I really need of it. Throughout the night there was stars from the nominated shows outside the theatre to celebrate 70 years of the Tonys (inspired by ‘Hamilton’s’ Ham 4 Ham shows they do Wednesday’s at the Richard Rogers theatre). Any reason to to see Steve Martin and his banjo I’m in. Next up we had the award for Featured Actress in a Musical which went to Renée Elise Goldsberry for ‘Hamilton’. Once I was able to see through my tears of happiness for her my eyes got treated to a piece of ‘Shuffle Along’ which looks incredible. I mean can you go wrong with Audra Mcdonald? The award for Featured Actor in a Musical went to Daveed Diggs for ‘Hamilton’ (OF COURSE, HE IS THAT SHOW). The award for Best Score went to Lin-Manuel Miranda for ‘Hamilton’. He wrote his wife a sonnet for his acceptance speech because that is how he do. We then got a snippet of ‘She Loves Me’, and now my main life goal is to have Jane Krakowski’s flexibility (GET IT GIRL). Directon of a Play went to Ivo Van Hove for ‘A View from the Bridge’, while Direction of a Musical went to Thomas Kail for ‘Hamilton’. Then we had a performance from ‘Fiddler on the Roof’, which was what you would expect from Fiddler. Featured Actor in a Play went to Reed Birney for ‘The Humans’. Then we got to a ‘Bright Star’ performance YAY STEVE. One of my favourite bits tonight was when James Corden pointed out all the current and past Tony Award winners and nominees who have been on Law and Order. Next up we got a look at ‘The Color Purple’, of course with Oprah Winfrey welcoming them to the stage. Leading Actress in a Play went to Jessica Lange for ‘Long Day’s Journey Into Night’ (yas kweeeen). We then got to see a piece of ‘On Your Feet’ (and we were assured all the cast has papers, in case Trump was wondering). The award for Leading Actor in a Play went to Frank Langella for ‘The Father’. Then we got to see the beautiful ‘Spring Awakening’, with sign language as per this rendition (it’s beautiful and so unique). Best Revival of a Play went to Arthur Miller’s ‘A View from the Bridge’. Barack and Michelle Obama then introduced the moment we have all been waiting for. ‘HAMILTON’!!! (Spoiler: It was fucking perfect). Best Play went to The Humans. And our last Musical nom of the night was ‘Waitress’, intro’d by Keri Russell. Corden then introduced some new upcoming plays based on the current election. Glenn Close as Hillary? Always, please. We got a tribute to ‘Chicago’, the longest running American musical of all time. This seamlessly went into the Best Revival of a Musical, which went to ‘The Color Purple’ (extra cute with Uzo Aduba presenting the award and her co-star from Orange is the New Black, Danielle Brooks, being in the cast). We then had the in memoriam, or as they call it ‘one last curtain call’. With Seasons of Love being played by string instruments, it was beautiful. Leading Actor in a Musical went to Leslie Odom Jr. for ‘Hamilton’ and his portrayal of Aaron Burr. I cannot get over Lin-Manuel Miranda’s proud father look as his co-stars were up there accepting their awards. Leading Actress in a Musical went to Cynthia Erivo for ‘The Color Purple’ (and her Broadway debut). Finally, Barbra Streisand presented the award for Best Musical which, of course, went to HAMILTON. The cast then sung out the show with The Schuyler Sisters (yassss). What a beautiful night. Just a note: ‘Hamilton’ had the most Tony nominations for a show ever, but fell one win short of tying ‘The Producers’ for most wins of all time. Original screenplay:

Best motion picture of the year:
“The Big Short” “Bridge of Spies” “Brooklyn” “Mad Max: Fury Road” “The Martian” “The Revenant” “Room” “Spotlight” This was quite honestly the most difficult category to choose who will likely win. While I think Spotlight and The Big Short were the best films, there has been lots of talk of The Revenant winning (which would be a shame). Currently it's being predicted The Big Short will win, but I could see Spotlight sneaking in and taking it, so I'm going with my gut on this one. Performance by an actor in a leading role: Bryan Cranston in “Trumbo” Matt Damon in “The Martian” Leonardo DiCaprio in “The Revenant” Michael Fassbender in “Steve Jobs” Eddie Redmayne in “The Danish Girl” I think the campaign around Leo winning is stupid. He's young and has a thriving career. He'll win eventually if he doesn't this time. However, this is a weakkk year for nominees, I don't think any of them deserve it, but Leo's is the best performance of the bunch. Performance by an actress in a leading role: Cate Blanchett in “Carol” Brie Larson in “Room” Jennifer Lawrence in “Joy” Charlotte Rampling in “45 Years” Saoirse Ronan in “Brooklyn” There is no competition here. Cate is a legend and her performance stunning, but Brie takes this one by a stretch. Performance by an actor in a supporting role: Christian Bale in “The Big Short” Tom Hardy in “The Revenant” Mark Ruffalo in “Spotlight” Mark Rylance in “Bridge of Spies” Sylvester Stallone in “Creed” I personally hate sentimental votes and wins but that's what's going to happen this year. I haven't seen Creed, but I think Mark was an extremely strong performance. Performance by an actress in a supporting role: Jennifer Jason Leigh in “The Hateful Eight” Rooney Mara in “Carol” Rachel McAdams in “Spotlight” Alicia Vikander in “The Danish Girl” Kate Winslet in “Steve Jobs” I'd be happy with Rachel or Alicia winning, but given the Globes I could see Kate sneaking in. Achievement in directing: "The Big Short” Adam McKay “Mad Max: Fury Road” George Miller “The Revenant” Alejandro G. Iñárritu “Room” Lenny Abrahamson “Spotlight” Tom McCarthy I think this was one of the best years for directing. Mad Max is one of the most highly entertaining films (and visually stunning); The Revenant is also beautiful, but that's mostly thanks to nature just doing its thing; Room made you feel as if you were in the claustrophobic space with Larson and Tremblay and achieved the feat of turning a heartwrenching book into an equally emotional movie; The Big Short was my second favourite film of the year, and Adam McKay turned something inherently difficult (and boring) to understand into a whirlwind film that explained things in such an unique and interesting way, it's beyond impressive; Spotlight took journalism films to another level, and it allowed you to walk away rethinking everything you've known. Directing and Best Picture should go hand-in-hand, you can't have one without the other, so my picks are the same for both. Adapted screenplay: “The Big Short” Screenplay by Charles Randolph and Adam McKay “Brooklyn” Screenplay by Nick Hornby “Carol” Screenplay by Phyllis Nagy “The Martian” Screenplay by Drew Goddard “Room” Screenplay by Emma Donoghue Original screenplay: “Bridge of Spies” Written by Matt Charman and Ethan Coen & Joel Coen “Ex Machina” Written by Alex Garland “Inside Out” Screenplay by Pete Docter, Meg LeFauve, Josh Cooley; Original story by Pete Docter, Ronnie del Carmen “Spotlight” Written by Josh Singer & Tom McCarthy “Straight Outta Compton” Screenplay by Jonathan Herman and Andrea Berloff; Story by S.
